Child Care Investigator, Bureau of Childcare

Job Description

The Bureau of Child Care ensures that child care services in New York City operate in compliance with the New York City Health Code and New York State Social Service regulations, and are licensed or permitted as required by law.  The Bureau routinely inspects child care centers, home-based child care programs, after-school programs and summer camps to protect the health and safety of children while in the child care environment.  The Bureau seeks to hire an Investigator to search for child care providers who are operating illegally, unregulated and thus more likely to create an environment with health and safety risks to children.

DUTIES WILL INCLUDE BUT NOT BE LIMITED TO:

–Perform thorough investigations of complaints associated with child care programs throughout the five boroughs.

–Conduct inspections for regulatory compliance beyond the scope of the complaint investigation for programs so being investigated.

–Conduct interviews with child care operators, staff, witness, families and children involved in complaints involving allegations of inadequate supervision, injuries, abuse and maltreatment of children while in child care.

–Examine and analyzes records and files of the child care program to ensure compliance with regulations.

–Is required to attend mandated meetings at provider agencies, testify at hearings and in court proceedings throughout the five boroughs.

–Must ensure accuracy of data before information is shared electronically. Responsible for the maintenance of confidential records/files for all investigation performed.

–Must be prepared to produce all required records and evidence to substantiate related legal processes.

Minimum Qual Requirements

1. A baccalaureate degree from an accredited college and two years of experience in community work or community centered activities in an area related to the duties described above; or
2. High school graduation or equivalent and six years of experience in community work or community centered activities in an area related to the duties as described above; or
3. Education and/or experience which is equivalent to “1” or “2” above. However, all candidates must have at least one year of experience as described in “1” above.

New York City residency is generally required within 90 days of appointment. However, City Employees in certain titles who have worked for the City for 2 continuous years may also be eligible to reside in Nassau, Suffolk, Putnam, Westchester, Rockland, or Orange County.
